Religious Education
Religious Education (RE) is a compulsory part of the school curriculum. Unlike most other subjects, the statutory syllabus for RE is locally agreed, recommended by a local standing advisory committee for RE (SACRE) for adoption by a local authority.
At Christ Church Hanham, we use the South Gloucestershire Locally Agreed Syllabus. This ensures that RE is multifaith, and recognises the place of Christianity and the other principal religions in the UK. Non-religious worldviews are included. As a Church of England school, we also use a programme called ‘Understanding Christianity’ to support the teaching and learning of Christianity.
RE provides a unique window into the world, enabling our children to learn about and from other faiths and views. It also encourages reflection, thinking and the chance to question. RE therefore supports, and builds upon, our vision, values and focus on spirituality. As an inclusive school, RE allows our children to understand the world in which they live, providing them with the knowledge and understanding of different worldviews whilst supporting them to develop as reflective, respectful and understanding young citizens of our world.
Parents/ carers do have a legal right to withdraw their child from RE. Should you feel you wish to discuss this, please contact the Headteacher.
