School Council

Hi, my name is Alfie and I was a member of last year’s Christ Church School Council. I would like to tell you about what we managed to achieve in my active year on the committee.

Lots of great ideas came to us in our meetings from all the classes in our school and we were able to accomplish lots of these.

Play Mounds

We were involved in the planning of the new school grounds. We spoke with Mrs Wilson and the Planners to discuss what we could change in our playgrounds. The play mounds you see on the Keystage 1 playing field are there because, we the children at Christchurch, made it happen!

School Library Bus

Discussions about having a quiet reflective area were talked about in meetings. Mr Barnett told us we could have an old disused bus and we came up with the idea of a school library bus. This can be used during lunch times if children want to have some quiet time to read a book. Not many schools can say that they’ve permanently got a bus parked in their grounds!

School Mural

Noticing that some of the older communal areas were looking run-down, we decided to brighten them up a bit with a new colourful mural. We worked together with Hanham Woods Academy to design and create a bright new piece of art work which is on the stairs at the top of the old building.

Supporting the Wider Community

We did not just work on things to improve in our school, we looked at the wider community. We supported the Hammer Out Brain Tumour society and all made bandanas as a symbol of solidarity. HTV came into to film us and the above photograph also appeared in the Bristol Evening Post!

Children in Need

Annually, we support the Children in Need project with a cake sale which is always a great success and raises a considerable amount for the charity, something we are all really proud of. This year we will be practising our home baking and selling our creations on Friday 14th November. Come along, enjoy a piece of cake, knowing that you are supporting a great charity!

Bristol Food Bank

Last year we visited Bristol Food Bank and helped out there for a morning boxing up food and toiletries for those in need. We did a school assembly on what we did and as a council then promoted the idea of having Foodbank Fridays where children bring in packets or tins of food to be taken to the food bank.

The School Council Committee take their roles very seriously and know that they can make a huge difference. I feel we accomplished lots last year and I am really proud of the achievements we made. I know this year’s council will continue with this hard work.
